BMW UX/UI Case – Internal Engineering Tools

Context

  • Company: BMW Group (Vehicle Development Tools)

  • Year: 2025

  • Role: UX/UI Intern

  • Team: Myself, UX Designer, Engineering Teams, Product Owner

Problem

BMW engineers rely on multiple internal tools for vehicle development.
⚠️ Issues:

  • Outdated interfaces slowed down workflows.

  • Inefficient filter & search functions made data hard to find.

  • Engineers needed faster, more intuitive tools to manage complex datasets.

Goal

  • Streamline vehicle development workflows through UX/UI redesign.

  • Introduce advanced filter and search functionalities.

  • Improve navigation speed and reduce friction in everyday tasks.

Process

  • Research: Conducted stakeholder interviews and task analysis with engineers.

  • Concept: Designed wireframes and prototypes for 3 internal tools.

  • Design: Focused on usability, clean layouts, and intuitive search/filter interactions.

  • Iteration: Refined designs based on feedback from engineers and PO.

Solution

  • New Filtering System: Multi-criteria filters for faster data narrowing.

  • Enhanced Search: Smart suggestions and predictive results.

  • Optimised Workflows: Clearer layouts and improved information hierarchy.

📸 Suggested Screens:

  1. Old Tool Interface (Before).

  2. Wireframe of new filtering system.

  3. High-fidelity search redesign.

  4. Workflow optimisation example (Before/After).

Outcomes (Expected)

  • Reduced time-to-find data for engineers.

  • Improved workflow efficiency in vehicle development.

  • Higher user satisfaction among engineering teams.

My Contribution

  • Created UX/UI concepts for 3 internal engineering tools.

  • Designed advanced filter and search functionalities.

  • Collaborated closely with engineers to validate usability.

Team Contribution

  • Engineers: provided workflows & feedback.

  • PO: aligned requirements with business needs.

  • UX Designer: supported refinement and consistency.

Reflection

This project gave me valuable experience in B2B and internal tool design. I learned to design for highly technical users, focusing on efficiency, clarity, and speed rather than aesthetics alone.

✅ Damit hast du jetzt drei Private Cases im gleichen Format:

  1. ING – Watchlist Rebrand

  2. ING – Dashboard Personalisation
